One of my biggest failings as a teachers was allowing my health to suffer.
I was running over 80 miles a week. My diet sucked. Not sleeping great. I had an undiagnosed thyroid condition. My energy was shot.
Why did I wait to do anything?
In hindsight it was pretty stupid.
Maybe I just thought it was “normal” to be exhausted.
Maybe it was just teaching. Or something else that was about to pass.
But it wasn’t.
I needed to be proactive instead of reactive. I think we ALL need to be proactive or teaching and life in general will break us down.
We will run out of gas.
Our students and our family are counting on us. We need to take care of ourselves.
Because we have people counting on us our health cannot be an afterthought.
Teachers, I hope this post can serve as a reminder to you to move your health a couple notches up the priority list.
Sneak in a nap. Get your exercise. Meditate. Get to the doctor (we all hate going, not just you) if you need to. Eat right. Do things you enjoy.
What has been one of your biggest failings as a teacher? How did you fix it?
