Thanksgiving is the time of year many of us think about and express what we are grateful for. Family. Food. Shelter. Health. Etc. Is once a year really enough to be grateful?
Part of my ideal morning routine each day is being grateful. I literally write down a few things I am grateful for most mornings.
There is research documenting the benefits of being grateful. But even if there wasn’t research expressing gratitude on a regular basis is worth doing.
I was reminded of this again when I was recently reading Tony Robbins’s book, “Awaken the Giant Within.” (The book is fantastic and I will post a summary and review when I am done).
As teachers, we have a LOT to be grateful for. Again, being grateful is not something we should remind ourselves of only once a year on Thanksgiving. Practicing being grateful can make us a better teacher. Better parents, spouses, brothers, sisters, neighbors. It will make us better people.
So for Thanksgiving 2017 my top 5 reasons for being grateful as a teacher are:
- Short term time. I know you feel busy. We all do. But many professions cannot leave work until 5 or 6pm each day. You most likely are out much earlier than that to go visit family or friends or go exercise. There are little things more valuable than time and freedom.
- Opportunity. EVERY day you have an opportunity to make a positive impact on someone. Every day you have an opportunity to push a child’s life in a different, better, direction. Do other professions really have those opportunities? How would you feel if you never had those opportunities?
- Making a difference. We don’t just have opportunities. As teachers and coaches, we are making a difference. Every day we are pushing kids towards their true potential. Again, how many professions feel that responsibility and rush each day? Not many.
- Long term time. We get summers off. We get weekends off for the most part. We get holidays off. I’ve had jobs where I had none of those off. It isn’t fun telling loved ones that you can’t make it to family events because of work. Be grateful.
To me, number 1 and number 4 – TIME, give me freedom to spend time with my family. There is nothing more valuable to me.

PS – I recently found a REALLY cool website that lets you take a normal page of text or a picture and convert it into a full size poster for free. You can print it out on a normal printer and it prints out with directions on how to cut it out and combine it into a full size poster.
The website is blockposters.com. Check it out.
